For an unforgettable, short-time getaway, at any time of the year, Syros island is the best choice. With daily ferry connections from Piraeus port and frequent flights from Athens and Thessaloniki, you are closer than you can imagine!
From the very first moment, the intense cosmopolitan atmosphere of Hermoupolis makes you feel unique. The magnificent neoclassical mansions of aristocrats, merchants and captains create an amazing scenery that you can’t stop admiring.
You can walk through the paved streets and observe details of the two-storey, three-storey or even larger architectures, with their large windows, elaborate rails, painted ceilings and impressive doors. Within this impressive setting, the most prominent place belongs to the city Palace, the Town Hall at Miaouli Square, a work of the important architect Ernst Ziller.
Check whether there are scheduled performances at the historical Apollon Theater. The interior is an exact copy of Milan’s “La Scala” and it has a unique decoration. You should also visit the majestic church of Agios Nikolaos in Vaporia. It is a church – monument created by the most important sculptors and painters of the time. You certainly have not seen anything like this before!
In lunch time you will surely look forward to tasting Syros flavors! In the picturesque streets of Hermoupolis with the bougainvilleas and the countless cats, there are small taverns waiting to satisfy your palate with every taste. But if your gastronomic interests are more sophisticated, then you should visit Vaporia and the chic restaurants with gourmet cuisine, tables at the water’s edge and a spectacular view towards the blue of the Aegean.
Strolling in Ano Syros you will discover a place that preserves a magical medieval atmosphere and travels you to another era. You can wander in the narrow streets with the whitewashed houses, listening to Vamvakaris music, stopping in small shops with beautiful handmade objects, climbing the stairs to the top, at the church of San Giorgis where you can enjoy the view towards Hermoupolis and the vast Aegean Sea. Your wandering may end in one of the local taverns, enjoying both the local cuisine and the beautiful sunset.
If the weather is good, you can swim at the beaches of Hermoupolis, the “Kymata” beach near the port, the “Agios Nikolaos Beach” below the homonymous church, the “Talliro” beach in Vaporia, the “Vaggelidi” and “Asteria” beaches which are very close to the city.
If the weather is not suitable for bathing or sunbathing, a car ride at the favorite resort of the wealthy Syros aristocrats, in the settlement Posidonia or Dellagrazia, will be quite rewarding. There, you will see old and new built villas of fine architecture, large gardens with palm trees and pine trees that still preserve the majesty of another era.
In the evening, Syros gets a special glamour that carries you away to the unique musical and theatrical events organized throughout the year. Alternatively, test your luck in the Hermoupolis casino or simply relax while drinking a fabulous local wine at one of the unique bars built on the rocks in Vaporia, enjoying the breathtaking view!
