SYROS ISLAND

An island of unforgettable contrasts

As the capital of the Cyclades island chain in the Aegean Sea, Syros is one of the best known and most diverse Greek islands. The long coexistence of Orthodox and Catholic faiths, the fusion of medieval architecture and Cycladic aesthetics, the local delicacies with influences from Asia Minor, and the variety of beaches mean that no two days spent in Syros are ever alike.

An island of contrasts

Ermoupoli, the capital of Syros, welcomes you with its cosmopolitan aura and neoclassical architecture – most notably in Miaouli Square, where the Town Hall stands as proudly today as it did when it was built in the late 19th century. Nearby, the Apollon Theater and elegant mansion houses of the Vaporia district bear witness to the commercial and artistic flourishing of Syros following the arrival of Greek refugees from Asia Minor and islands like Chios after the Greek Revolution against the Ottomans.

Above Ermoupoli is Ano Syros, the medieval settlement created by the Venetians from 1200s, who introduced the first of the island’s many Catholic churches (most famously the Cathedral of St George). But Ano Syros is also famous for its Cycladic architecture of tightly packed, whitewashed houses.

Everything about your holidays in Syros will be unforgettable. You’ll be treated to the flavors of Asia Minor with loukoumia (Turkish delight) and halvadopita (nougat with nut fillings) and enjoy other delicious local delicacies. There are wineries offering wine tasting and vineyard tours and a lively nightlife scene in the bars and cafes of Ermoupoli and Ano Syros.

An all-year-round island

There’s so much to look forward to during your holidays in Syros, where every season is different. Spring and autumn are the perfect times to enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling and horse riding.

There are traditions from Venetian times that are still going strong and festivals & events throughout the year – most notably the colorful Syros Carnival and tradition of Easter being celebrated on the same day by both the Orthodox and Catholic faiths. Holy Week in Syros is like nowhere else in the world.

Meanwhile, the museums and cultural attractions of both Ermoupoli and Ano Syros offer fascinating glimpses into the past. And in northern Syros, the archaeological sites of Kastri and Chalandriani are among of the most important prehistoric settlements in the region.

Beaches and villages for every mood

Looking for a beach that’s fully organized with sunbeds & umbrellas, tavernas and water sports? Or perhaps you prefer something remote and secluded? On Syros, you can take your pick from an incredible variety of beaches. Whether you’re traveling as a family, a couple or a group of friends, you’ll find what you’re looking for. Many beaches have also been made accessible for visitors with mobility difficulties.

All around Syros are villages & settlements (both coastal and inland) that you can visit or stay in. Many are popular for their great beaches and others – like Posidonia (with its aristocratic villas) and San Michali (known for its stone houses and traditional cheese) in the remote Apano Meria region in the north – have their own fascinating stories to tell.

Everywhere you look on Syros, there are contrasts waiting to be discovered.

How to get to Syros

Getting to Syros couldn’t be easier. There is an airport with year-round flights from Athens and a port with regular ferry services from Piraeus and Rafina and other Greek islands. The excellent facilities and infrastructure and year-round life also make it a growing favourite with remote workers.

We look forward to welcoming you to Syros.
