ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITES

Syros was first inhabited in Neolithic times, but the most significant remains are from the Early Cycladic period (2700-2200 BC), at Kastri and Chalandriani, landmark prehistoric settlements in the Aegean. Passing into antiquity, there is evidence that the settlement of Ancient Galissos was inhabited from the 8th-7th centuries BC and the ancient philosopher Pherecydes lived in a cave that is today named after him in the 6th century BC. Meanwhile, in Grammata, there are inscriptions of sailors who anchored their ships there dating from Classical times (5th-4th centuries BC) to the Middle Ages. Nearby finds indicate the existence of a sanctuary dedicated to the god Asclepius. Many other archaeological discoveries have also been made in other settlements of Syros, such as Ermoupoli, Vari and Finikas – all representing the long history of the island.
