THE CAVE OF PHERECYDES

Pherecydes of Syros was an Ancient Greek mythographer and philosopher born in the 6th century BC. Although he is considered one of the early Greek thinkers (known as the Pre-Socratic philosophers), and some accounts believe him to be one of the Seven Wise Men of Greece, very little is known about his life – other than that he lived in a cave in northern Syros.

The Cave of Pherecydes is located on the road north of Ano Syros. To reach it, you follow a small dirt path that starts shortly after the settlement of Kyperoussa. It is worth visiting just for the beautiful landscape and the narrow opening offers magical views across the Aegean Sea towards the islands of Mykonos and Tinos. The setting makes you wonder about the life of the philosopher who is said to have spent the cold winters here.

Pherecydes wrote a book on cosmogony and is believed to have been the first writer to express philosophical ideas in prose rather than verse. He is also said to have taught Pythagoras, the great mathematician and philosopher from Samos. He laid the foundations for later thinkers on matters of nature and the universe. However, only a few short fragments of his work are preserved in quotations from other ancient philosophers.

He is also credited with the invention of a solar clock known as the Heliotropion of Pherecydes. One can be found in the village of San Michali, in Apano Meria, and looks like an irrigation sump or well. In fact, it is an instrument that marks the passing of time and the seasons according to the motion of the sun. You will encounter a bust of Pherecydes at the top of the Ano Syros settlement.
