CHALANDRIANI

Along with nearby Kastri, Chalandriani is considered one of the most important Early Cycladic Period settlements found in Greece.

Located just below the modern settlement of Chalandriani in the northern Apano Meria region of Syros, it is largely unexcavated. However, more than 600 graves have been discovered and it was probably the biggest settlement on the island. The cemetery (between the present-day settlement of Chalandriani and Kastri) is the also the largest from the Bronze Age discovered in the Cyclades.

The graves have been dated to 2700-2200 BC and contained earthenware vessels with printed and engraved decorations of ships, indicating a special relationship with the sea. Other items found include jewellery, vases, household utensils, compasses and weapons, as well as examples of the famous Cycladic figurines. Finds from Chalandriani are housed in the Archaeological Museum of Syros, as well as the Museum of Cycladic Art and the National Archaeological Museum of Athens.

A path connects prehistoric Chalandriani with Kastri, but it is rough and Apano Meria is the most remote and rugged part of the island. So it is best to use an experienced guide.
