In the area of Lazaretta near the pesthouse and the old prison of Syros, the Church of Saint Eleftherios was built in 1900 to offer hope to the prisoners. It is a small, single-aisle church that was reconstructed in 1988 welcoming guests with a shrine at the entrance of the temple bearing the icon of Saint Eleftherios. Another characteristic of the temple are the offerings depicting infants as the Church of St. Eleftherios is associated with pregnancy and childbirth. It is customary also for women who are bearing a child to visit the temple while holding white ribbons that the laywoman would bless by crossing them over the icon of the Saint for the women to have a good childbirth.
